Trans actress Trace Lysette, best known for her feature appearances on the hit TV show Pose on FX and recently a cameo in the movie Hustlers, was crowned Mayor of the Day during the City of West Hollywood’s Halloween Carnaval!
The city council of WeHo also honored her with the keys to the city! During her acceptance speech, Lysette shed light on Aimee Stephens’ current fight for transgender rights at the U.S Supreme Court.
According to Vox, this case will decide if transgender people are entitled to sex-based protections under Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
Stephens, the plaintiff in the case, was working as a funeral director and embalmer when she came out as a trans woman in 2013, informing her employer with a letter explaining why her transition was necessary for her quality of life. Shortly thereafter, she was fired. Stephens filed a complaint with the EEOC claiming she was discriminated against because of her sex.
The U.S Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Stephen’s case on Oct. 8, 2019 and a decision is expected to come out as early as January 2020, or as late as June.
Congratulations Trace on being honored, but most importantly, thank you for using your platform to advocate awareness to transgender rights issues.
