Alana Giselle Banks, the first openly Black transgender woman elected to a public school board in the United States, has launched her re-election campaign for the Decatur Public Schools (DPS 61) Board. With over a decade as a community advocate, Banks made meaningful progress in educational equity, student engagement, and inclusivity during her initial term.
During her tenure, she has led successful negotiations with the Decatur Federation of Teaching Assistants, played an essential role in appointing Superintendent Dr. Clark and Assistant Superintendent Vladimir Talley, and championed district-wide inclusivity. Banks's leadership has strengthened DPS 61’s transparency and commitment to a supportive educational environment.
When reflecting on her re-election bid, Banks stated, “It has been an honor to serve Decatur’s students and families, and I am excited to continue our progress toward a school system that provides every student with equal access to a quality education.”
Banks aims to expand support for underserved students, elevate diversity initiatives, and foster community partnerships. Her background as a paralegal and Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children underscores her dedication to equity and social justice in educational leadership. Her re-election campaign seeks to advance these efforts, paving the way for Decatur's future.
