Female rapper Young MA has hit the ground running since she released her hit single “Ooouuu” back in 2016. Even better than the huge success of her hit track, was the message behind her song. In releasing the track, Young MA told the world that she identifies as a lesbian. It goes without saying that the 29-year-old has accomplished a lot, all while stating her truth. In addition to becoming a breakout star, Young MA has also pursued other business ventures in the entertainment industry.
Back in 2018, Young MA teamed up with Pornhub to direct her first ever lesbian film “The Gift”. The project proved a pivotal moment in time not only for the porn site but for the New York rapper as well.
Spitting killer bars isn’t the only thing Young MA is great at. She's has always had an interest in the world of filming and acting. Interestingly enough, her first introduction to the film industry came during PornHub’s 2018 “Visionaries Directors’ Club” filming initiative. At the time, the project pushed for diverse voices in the porn industry. More importantly, it sought to cater more to female audiences. Pornhub selected Young MA to work on the lesbian film “The Gift.”
During the behind-the-scenes look, Young MA affectionately described the scene as a “surprise within a surprise.” The rapper detailed the premise as a girl giving her partner a surprise birthday gift. Though, in order to “find” her gift, her girlfriend must travel to a luxurious house and walk through all its rooms, blindfolded.
Furthermore, Young MA wasn’t the only star on set. The celebrity rap star was joined by real-life porn stars as well. Highsnobiety reported that adult entertainer Asa Akira starred in “The Gift” as well. The former porn star and now talent manager has starred in over 505 adult films since 2016. Of course, working in a room full of women, both in front of and behind the scenes, had been an exciting experience for Young MA.
When discussing her debut film directorial with Pornhub, she noted that she felt really hands-on with “The Gift.” In the behind-the-scenes footage, fans can find the rapper giving out directives like a pro to one of the actresses on set. After her first lesson in filming, the star revealed that she’ll pursue film directing later on down the road.
Though, Young MA didn’t just enjoy the technical side of directing a scene in a porn film. She also appreciated the opportunity to “craft a story that was authentic and true to herself.” Turns out the rap star meant that literarily. Young MA revealed that “The Gift” would also be a part of her 2017 “Herstory” album. According to a press release, the film also made use of the rapper’s music by featuring them in “key scenes.” The star had plenty of free range over the project.
By being able to express herself freely on the set of a porn film, it seems that the rap star has always remain comfortable in her sexuality. Though, that wasn’t always the case for the New York emcee. During a 2017 interview with The Guardian, Young MA told the publication that she often hid her sexuality from friends and family.
Though, it wasn’t until she turned 18, that she finally decided to “come out” to everyone. Rather than facing ridicule, Young MA’s personal life benefited greatly. Not to mention, her rap career took off. Back in 2016, Young MA told Noisey Raps that girls everywhere loved her.
“Since I came out officially, that’s when all the girls flopped; that’s when it was a wrap.”
Despite “coming out of the closet” though, Young MA has since done away with labels. Currently, she doesn’t consider herself a lesbian. Back in 2019, during an interview with Hollywood Unlocked Uncensored, the rapper revealed that “I just wouldn’t date a guy . . . I just don’t date dudes. I love women.”
Young MA made a similar statement during her sit down with Pornhub on the set of “The Gift”, making it a point not refer to the project as a “lesbian scene” but one where “women are just being women.”
Clearly, Young MA doesn’t like having her sexuality placed inside a box. Though, she’s on her way to becoming one of the most powerful queer women in Hollywood.
