Hashtags like #lesbian, #bisexual, #gay, #trans, #queer, #nonbinary, #pansexual, #transwomen, and more have been blocked by Instagram’s “sensitive content” filter, which has labeled them as “sexually suggestive.”
A report from User Mag highlights that Meta, Instagram’s parent company, has been “mistakenly” restricting LGBTQ+ content from its search and discovery pages. While the company reviewed the issue and made the necessary adjustments to correct the issue, this breach underscores a more concerning matter as it relates to social media platforms and their censorship of particular content.
This issue is not isolated to Instagram; it reflects broader challenges within social media platforms regarding content moderation and biases within various algorithms. Meta reversed the restrictions on LGBTQ search terms after User Mag reached out for comment, saying that it was in error. “These search terms and hashtags were mistakenly restricted,” a Meta spokesperson said.
“It’s important to us that all communities feel safe and welcome on Meta apps, and we do not consider LGBTQ+ terms to be sensitive under our policies.”
However, critics argue that more proactive measures are necessary to prevent such occurrences. This includes diversifying the teams that develop these algorithms to ensure a broader range of perspectives and implementing more robust testing to identify potential biases before they affect users. The challenges faced by Instagram are emblematic of a larger, industry-wide issue.
