It has been rumored that the next installment in the Power Rangers franchise will feature a female transgender ranger. These rumors are not to be taken lightly! According to the latest intel from We Got This Covered, this is a very plausible development. But it doesn’t stop there! The Red Ranger (typically cast as a male) will most likely be played by a female, which is something that has been extremely rare for the TV series and will definitely turn some heads! These reports also state that the Blue Ranger may also be gay.
In 2017, the rangers saw a win for team rainbow when Lionsgate decided to introduce the Yellow Ranger as a queer character. With Paramount leading this popular sci-fi franchise into the future, we could see some new and exciting changes to the reboot.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that the upcoming ranger film is in development with Jonathan Entwistle, known for his Netflix series The End of the F—-ing World, at the helm as director. According to the Reporter, this re-imagining of the 1990’s original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers will take the brightly suited heroes on an adventure back to the 1990’s in a fun, retro twist, where they will need to find their way back to the present.
While several comic book to film adaptations have provided today's audience with a taste of diversity, there's much more work to be done. For example, according to DailyDot, Wonder Woman, Deadpool, Harley Quinn, Iceman and Batwoman are all iconic LGBTQ heroes that have been translated as straight on the big screen. Not cool, Hollywood.
