Will Ferrell...on a cross country road trip...embracing trans acceptance.
Well, that's exactly what you can expect in the upcoming Netflix documentary, Will & Harper. In the midst of filming a new movie, Will Ferrell receives an unexpected email: his longtime friend and colleague of almost 30 years has come out to him as a transwoman.
The friend in question is Harper Steele, a writer Ferrell met on his first day at the iconic Saturday Night Live in 1995. In a destined sort of way, their collaboration quickly developed into a fruitful creative synergy. Over time, their partnership blossomed into a steadfast friendship that has endured the past three decades.
From the brief peeks offered in the trailer, the documentary appears to be a coming-of-age-style road trip film. Ferrell & Steele journey coast to coast, visiting destinations that hold significance for both of them and, on a larger scale for America.
Steele navigates with vulnerability and strength, traveling through space and time to reclaim her true sense of self alongside her long-time friend Ferrell. Of course, no road trip would be complete without some heartfelt conversations.
"Were you a little worried about how to talk to me when I came out to you?", Harper asks Ferrell. "Yeah probably a little nervous" says Ferrell. Steele establishes full transparency with her confidant.
"There are no ground rules with friends. I invite any friend of mine to ask me these questions.", Harper Steele.
It's clear that these two share an honest connection...not just with each other, but within themselves. Without this genuine bond, the entire journey would be toxic at worst and pointless at best.
Directed by Josh Greenbaum (Becoming Bond, Barb & Star Go to Vista del Mar), Will & Harper has received standing ovations at Telluride Film Festival, performed great at Sundance, and garnered praise from the likes of Variety, Harper's Bazaar, New York Magazine, & Rolling Stone. Currently this ratings hit documentary holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Ultimately the journey serves as a litmus test for Steele. Is the America that she loves and cherishes ready to embrace her womanhood? Can she face the traumas of her past with resolve? Will their friendship be able to withstand and evolve from the pressure of such an expedition? Only one way to find out!
Will & Harper will be in select theaters September 13 and on Netflix September 27.
